Rotary Charities, located in Traverse City, Michigan, is a leader in philanthropic circles, known for learning and embracing innovation in service of tackling complex problems and creating accessible assets for all.

Since our founding in 1977, Rotary Charities has worked toward positive change in the region by providing resources and leadership in the five counties we serve (Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau). 

In recent years, we have evolved from a traditional grantmaking organization to a regional changemaking organization. This requires innovative grantmaking, impact investing, communications and capacity building strategies, as well as effective internal structures to support the work.  


Candidate profile

With the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) preparing for retirement, Rotary Charities seeks a dynamic, skilled leader who can inspire, connect and mobilize others, foster a positive, productive workplace culture, and keep our organization strong, nimble and visionary. Strategic astuteness, a drive for collaboration, inspiring personal presence, natural optimism, humility, good listening skills, and a sense of humor are important personal attributes in this role.

The CEO will have overall operational responsibility for staff and programs, and execution of its strategic plan. Reporting to a 10-person board of directors, the CEO supervises a professional staff of five, and manages an annual operating budget of nearly $2M.


Key responsibilities

  • Effectively partner with and co-create strategic direction with the Board

  • Oversee grant making, impact investing and capacity building programs 

  • Foster a learning, adaptable organization

  • Develop collaborative relationships, connect and leverage resources

  • Serve as a community thought leader and convener

  • Represent Rotary Charities, serve as the spokesperson

  • Effectively develop staff and manage infrastructure to meet strategic goals

  • Cultivate a positive culture of learning, trust, care and collaboration among staff and community partners 

  • Build on equity strategy created by staff



A leadership background in non-profit or philanthropy sectors is highly valued. Experience in key programmatic areas of systems change, community development and capacity building is preferred. 


  • Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience required. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience of successful executive leadership with operational responsibilities. 

  • Experience working successfully with a Board of Directors.

  • Experience leading and managing staff and boards.

  • Financial and business acumen.

  • Track record of successfully executing toward a vision.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  

  • Strong financial and business acumen.

  • Ability to work in the US.


Work Location and Physical Requirements

Rotary Charities’ office is in Traverse City, Michigan. The work requires some evenings and weekends.

The CEO must provide their own transportation for work-related travel or commuting. Physical requirements also include sitting and/or standing at a desk for extended periods of the workday, and ability to accomplish basic computer skills for business. Must be able to work in an office environment with low to moderate noise levels. 



The salary range for this position is $100-140,000 per year. Rotary Charities offers benefits that include health insurance, paid time off and a retirement plan with match.
