Community Development
Building A Thriving and resilient Region
In each community we serve, what it means to thrive is shaped by the unique needs and values of its residents.
To us, strengthening communities means investing in the assets that make communities more livable, connected, and equitable—like housing, transportation, food systems, public spaces, natural landscapes, and cultural institutions. We believe that when these assets are created and shaped by the people who use them, they have the power to transform communities for the better.
Our Approach
Rotary Charities supports community development efforts that are led by those who know their communities best. Through funding, learning, and connections, we help changemakers imagine what’s possible and bring those visions to life. Our support prioritizes collaboration, equity, and sustainability so that progress can be both inclusive and long-lasting.
We focus on:
- Supporting efforts that address barriers to access or opportunity
 - Encouraging cross-sector partnerships and community-driven planning
 - Building local capacity to adapt and lead through change

What We Support
We support both the development of community assets—like shared spaces, infrastructure, and natural environments—and programmatic initiatives that strengthen the systems and relationships within a place.
We invest in initiatives that:
- Create or improve affordable and accessible housing
 - Expand access to healthy food and sustainable food systems
 - Develop or revitalize public spaces and community infrastructure
 - Strengthen the civic and cultural assets that make communities vibrant
 - Engage residents in planning, decision-making, and leadership roles

Much of our funding for community development is offered through our Assets for Thriving Communities and Seed Grant programs. These grants support work at different stages of readiness—from early exploration to implementation and growth.
We also convene the Rural Community Development Roundtable, a space for connection and shared learning among those working to strengthen rural communities in our region. Through regular gatherings, we create opportunities for local leaders to exchange ideas, explore challenges, and learn from one another's experiences in community development.
