Systems Change Accelerator
Systems Change Accelerator Grants
Some challenges demand a different approach that goes beyond traditional methods. The Systems Change Accelerator grant supports collaborative initiatives that aim to transform the systems producing persistent, complex problems—like poverty, homelessness, climate change, and health inequities. These issues are often the result of interconnected factors and systemic conditions, and solving them in our communities requires bold thinking and coordinated action.
Funding: Up to $150,000
Deadlines: March & September
Grant Period: 2-3 years
Rather than treating symptoms, systems change strategies work upstream of the problem—shifting power, policies, practices, and mindsets to create long-term solutions. This kind of work often involves diverse partners carrying out multiple, complementary actions across a system. It centers equity, targeting the root causes of the problem and prioritizing those most affected by it.
We believe systems change efforts are most successful when the time is right—when momentum is building, when key partners are aligned, and when there’s an opportunity to rebuild systems rooted in belonging, connection, and resilience.
Grants in this category support initiatives that have the potential to:
- Restructure how systems function
- Change policies, practices, and resource flows
- Shift relationships and power dynamics
- Transform the mental models that shape beliefs and behaviors
What We Fund
Systems Change Accelerator grants are not limited to any one issue area. We’re open to any complex problem where a systemic approach can help build a more fair, thriving, and resilient region for all.
The actions that will change a system are unique to the particular context of that system. Some actions that have been funded in previous years include:
- Convening of cross-sector networks that are working together to share information and best practices, align work more effectively, experiment with new innovations, and learn
- Advocacy work to increase public or legislative support
- Communication work to change public narratives about a problem or solution
- Stipends to compensate stakeholders experiencing a problem to participate in creating solutions
- Creating new standards for data collection, sharing and use between organizations
For detailed examples of work funded under this grant category, see Stories of Change: How a Systems Change Approach is Transforming a Region.
If you're still in the early stages of exploring a systems change process—such as building relationships, understanding the system, or beginning to identify leverage points—consider applying for a Seed Grant. Our Learning Fund provides support for personal or organizational learning to better understand systems thinking or change strategies.

- Clearly defined the problem, including who is most affected, the scale and scope of the issue, how it's typically been addressed, and why the timing is right for change
- Identified and prioritized leverage points for change within the system
- Designed a constellation of aligned actions that target those leverage points
- Established agreements with key partners who will implement these actions, leveraging their unique assets and roles
- Created channels to stay connected with others in the system, even if they are not directly involved in your initiative
- Preparing for Systems Change Work
If your work is not quite there yet, we’re here to support you in getting ready. Systems change begins with deep listening, exploration, and shared learning.
- Seed Grants are available to support the early phases of this work—convening, planning, and investigating alongside partners.
- The Learning Fund offers support for individuals and teams looking to build skills and knowledge related to systems thinking and change.
You don’t need to follow a prescribed path. Whether you use a structured framework or a process tailored to your context, what matters is a commitment to understanding the system and designing for meaningful change.
To support your journey, we recommend resources like:
- Systems Practice, a free, 8-week on-demand course from Acumen Academy (available with local consultant support)

Throughout the year, we also offer Learning Experiences that connect changemakers to shared learning and relationships grounded in systems thinking. Keep an eye on upcoming opportunities to grow your readiness and community of practice.
